21 Days. Three Weeks. The World Cup Is Almost Here. Here's Where Miami Gardens Stands.

Saudi Arabia vs. Uruguay. June 15. 6:00 PM. Twenty-one days.
Three weeks from today, the first FIFA World Cup match kicks off at Hard Rock Stadium. Saudi Arabia vs. Uruguay. June 15. 6:00 PM. It's Memorial Day, which means the unofficial start of summer. In Miami Gardens, that summer starts with the biggest event in the city's 23-year history. Here's where everything stands with 21 days to go.
What happened since the last update
Gas prices hit a record Memorial Day high
Florida's average hit $4.51 per gallon this weekend, the highest Memorial Day gas price in state history. GasBuddy's summer forecast projects an average of $4.80 through Labor Day, with $5.00+ possible if the Strait of Hormuz stays closed. CBS Miami found one woman at a Fort Lauderdale discount station who said she needs her car just to get to the doctor. Marine gas is at $7 per gallon. For World Cup visitors, the free Game Day Express shuttle saves $30-$50 per match day in fuel and parking alone. Full breakdown in our gas prices guide.
Hotel bookings are still below expectations
BBC Sport's report that hotel bookings are soft across every host city hasn't been contradicted by new data. FIFA blames the industry. The industry blames FIFA room blocks. Meanwhile, NYC secured $50 tickets for residents with free bus rides. Miami-Dade still has no comparable program. If you're an Airbnb host, soft hotel demand could push price-conscious visitors toward your listing. Stay flexible on pricing.
Neymar confirmed for Brazil's World Cup squad
Coach Carlo Ancelotti selected Neymar for the Brazil squad after months of fitness questions. Brazil plays Scotland at Hard Rock Stadium on June 24 at 6:00 PM. It's the most expensive group-stage ticket at the Miami venue, with resale seats starting at $1,600-$2,100+. If you're going to splurge on one match, this is the one the city will remember.
Three shootings in NW Miami-Dade over the holiday weekend
One person dead, two hospitalized across three separate incidents in 24 hours. The shootings occurred in NW Miami-Dade, bordering Miami Gardens. Five years ago almost exactly, the El Mula Banquet Hall mass shooting at NW 186th Street (in Miami Gardens) killed three and wounded 23. As the World Cup brings global attention to this area, the community safety conversation isn't abstract. It's happening on the blocks around the stadium.
Two more wildfires burning
The Mile Marker 44 Fire in western Broward (1,200 acres, 60% contained) and the Boystown Fire near Miami Executive Airport (24 acres, under control). Air quality in Miami Gardens is currently good with east winds pushing smoke west. Hurricane season starts in 7 days.
The 21-day checklist
For residents
Hurricane season starts June 1 (7 days). If you haven't reviewed your insurance, checked flood coverage, or scheduled a wind mitigation inspection, do it this week. Our insurance guide has the full checklist. The 30-day NFIP flood insurance waiting period means a policy purchased today takes effect June 24, the day Brazil plays Scotland.
Juneteenth celebrations start June 6. The City of Miami Gardens presents the Fields of Possibilities Charity Tournament at Rolling Oaks Park, 8 AM to 3 PM. Teams compete on behalf of local charities with prize donations up to $1,000. Full preview coming June 1.
Road closure maps still haven't been released. This remains the most frustrating gap in World Cup planning for residents near the stadium. We're watching for the announcement and will publish it immediately.
