Known as "The Magic City" for its rapid growth that seemed almost magical to early visitors, Miami was officially incorporated on July 28, 1896, with just over 300 residents. The city holds the unique distinction of being the only major U.S. city founded by a woman—Julia Tuttle, a local citrus grower who convinced railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to extend his railway to the region.
Miami is the "Gateway to Latin America" and the "Capital of Latin America" due to its strong commercial and cultural ties and majority-Hispanic population.
Miami's skyline is the third-largest in the U.S., with over 300 high-rises. In a 2018 UBS study of 77 world cities, Miami ranked as the third-richest city in the United States.
The city's cultural diversity is one of its greatest assets. With 70% of the population identifying as Hispanic and 57.6% born outside the United States, Miami is a truly international city where Spanish is widely spoken and Latin American culture thrives alongside American traditions.
