Carol City's Appeal Denied: FHSAA Upholds 2026 Playoff Ban

Carol City will not play in the 2026 FHSAA playoffs after its appeal was denied.

Miami Carol City's last chance at a 2026 playoff run is over. The Florida High School Athletic Association denied the school's appeal of its postseason ban on Sunday, November 1, keeping the Chiefs out of the playoffs that begin later this month.

What we know

Decision: Carol City's appeal was denied on Sunday, November 1, and its 2026 postseason ban stands. Original penalty: A postseason ban, 15 player suspensions, restrictive probation, a $1,500 fine, and a required compliance workshop, issued after a postgame fight at Grayson (Ga.) on October 2. Next for the FHSAA: Playoff brackets will be announced Friday, November 6, at 5:00 p.m.

The appeal

Carol City made its appeal to the FHSAA on Sunday afternoon, less than a week before the association reveals its postseason brackets. According to reports citing state officials, the appeal was denied and the ban was upheld. The decision means the Chiefs cannot compete for either an Open Division or Class 2A state title this season, regardless of where they finish in the rankings.

A strong finish that won't count toward a title

Since the ban was announced in October, Carol City has won four straight games, beating Miami Northwestern, Palmetto, Mater Academy, and a ranked Miami Central team. The Chiefs are 7-3, and in the latest MaxPreps Florida rankings they checked in as the state's No. 6 team in the Open Division race. Without the ban, they would likely have been in the mix for one of the eight spots in the FHSAA's first Open Division bracket.

Four straight wins, a top-10 ranking, and no playoff run. It is a hard ending for one of Miami Gardens' proudest programs.

How we got here

The FHSAA issued its penalties on October 8 after reviewing video of a fight that broke out in the handshake line after Carol City's 10-9 loss at Grayson. It was the second time this fall the association disciplined the program. Earlier in the season, Carol City was fined a total of $3,700 and forced to forfeit two wins, over West Boca Raton in the preseason and Daytona Beach Mainland in the regular season, after a player was ruled ineligible. Read our earlier coverage of the original ruling.

What happens now

Carol City will finish out its season without a postseason. The FHSAA will announce its brackets on Friday, and Miami Gardens' other programs, Norland and Monsignor Pace, will learn their postseason fates then. We will cover the brackets and what they mean for local teams.

Our take

The players who stayed focused and kept winning after the ruling deserve credit for how they finished. Carol City has given Miami Gardens decades of pride, and the program's history is bigger than one season. We will keep following the Chiefs.
