Messi Is Coming to Miami Gardens. It's Official: Argentina vs Cape Verde at Hard Rock Stadium, July 3.
By MiamiGardens.com Editorial · · 7 min read
It's confirmed. Lionel Messi, the new all-time World Cup goalscoring record holder, brings Argentina to Hard Rock Stadium on July 3 to face the Cape Verde fairytale. The biggest match in Miami Gardens history.
We hoped. We speculated. Now it's real. Lionel Messi is coming to Miami Gardens. The bracket is set, and on Friday, July 3, the defending world champions Argentina will face the tournament's greatest underdog story, Cape Verde, in the World Cup Round of 32 at Hard Rock Stadium. This is the match we have been dreaming about since the tournament began, and it is happening in our city.
How we got the dream matchup
Two storylines collided to produce this. First, Cape Verde, the island nation of 600,000 people, completed their fairytale by securing second place in Group H. After drawing Spain and Uruguay at Hard Rock, they closed the group with a third draw, a 0-0 against Saudi Arabia, finishing on four points. As we wrote could happen, the Group H runner-up returns to Miami Gardens for the July 3 Round of 32. That runner-up is Cape Verde. The fairytale is coming back to the exact stadium where it captured America's heart.
Second, Argentina won Group J with a perfect nine points from three matches. As the Group J winner, they were always slotted for the July 3 Hard Rock match against the Group H runner-up. The bracket lined up exactly as we hoped in our earlier preview: Messi and Argentina, coming to Miami Gardens.
Messi just broke the record
If you needed any more reason to want to be there, here it is: Lionel Messi scored in all three group-stage matches and has now broken the record for most World Cup goals in history. At 39 years old, in what he has signaled is his final World Cup, Messi is rolling back the years and giving Argentina's title defense everything he has.
The man who already lives and trains in South Florida with Inter Miami will now play a World Cup knockout match roughly 20 minutes from his home stadium. Rodrigo De Paul, his Inter Miami teammate, is also in the Argentina squad. As we noted weeks ago, this is the kind of storyline football writes when it's trying to be poetic: the greatest player of his generation, playing a World Cup match in the city where he plays his club football.
What it means for Miami Gardens
This is, without exaggeration, the biggest single sporting event in the history of Miami Gardens. Not the Super Bowls. Not the Grand Prix. Not even the previous World Cup matches at this stadium. Messi, the new all-time World Cup goalscoring record holder, in a knockout match, in his adopted home city, against the tournament's beloved underdog. The global eyes on Hard Rock Stadium on July 3 will be unmatched.
For Cape Verde, the reward for their historic run is the hardest possible draw. As one analyst put it, "Cape Verde are a lovely story. Argentina are a freight train. This one probably ends badly for the Cape Verdeans, but the stadium will be loud and the occasion will be unforgettable." The Blue Sharks have already defied every expectation. Nobody should bet against them making it interesting.
