Carol City Football Banned From Playoffs, 15 Players Suspended After Postgame Fight in Georgia
By MiamiGardens.com Editorial • • Updated • 4 min read
Carol City will play out its regular season, but the FHSAA has ruled it out of the 2026 playoffs.
Miami Carol City's season has changed dramatically. The Florida High School Athletic Association has banned the Chiefs from the 2026 postseason and suspended 15 players after a fight broke out following their 10-9 loss at Grayson in Georgia on October 2. Here is what we know.
Postseason: Carol City is ineligible for the 2026-27 football playoffs. Suspensions: 15 players. Four are out for the rest of the season, nine for five games, and two for one game. Other penalties: restrictive probation, a $1,500 fine ($100 per player involved), and a required athletic compliance workshop.
What happened
Carol City lost a close, defensive game at Grayson, a nationally ranked program in Loganville, Georgia, on Friday, October 2. Reports and video posted afterward show a fight breaking out in the postgame handshake line. In the most serious moments, several Carol City players appear to strike a Grayson player who was on the ground before a Carol City coach stepped in and pulled players away.
Because the game crossed state lines, each state's association handled its own school. The Georgia High School Association suspended four Grayson players for one game earlier this week. The FHSAA announced its sanctions against Carol City on Thursday, October 8, after reviewing video of the incident. The two associations had earlier issued a joint statement emphasizing zero tolerance for this kind of behavior.
What it means for the season
The playoff ban is the most significant penalty. Carol City, now 3-3, had still been in the conversation for one of eight spots in the FHSAA's first Open Division bracket, which brings together the state's top programs. Under the ruling, the Chiefs will finish their regular season but will not compete in the postseason.
The suspensions take effect immediately, starting with Friday night's home game against rival Miami Northwestern.
Not the first issue this season
This is the second time this fall the FHSAA has disciplined Carol City. Earlier in the season, the association ruled a transfer player ineligible, which led to Carol City forfeiting two wins, one in the preseason and one over Daytona Beach Mainland, along with fines.
Can the ruling be appealed?
Yes. Carol City can appeal the penalties to the FHSAA Board of Directors. Some reports said the school planned to appeal, while others said it was unclear whether it would. Miami-Dade County Public Schools has said it is aware of the sanctions and is conducting its own review.
Carol City beat Miami Northwestern 17-7 on October 9, one day after the ruling, playing without the suspended players. On Friday night, Chiefs players were seen holding up "Free Carol City" shirts in protest of the ban. Multiple reports say the school plans to appeal to the FHSAA Board of Directors, and one report said it could take the matter to court if the team is not reinstated. Carol City is not alone: the FHSAA banned five programs statewide from the postseason after three separate fights that same week, including Deltona and Matanzas. Read our Week 8 recap.
Carol City's appeal is expected to go before the full FHSAA Board of Directors. The board's next meeting is scheduled for November 1 and 2 in Gainesville, so a decision is not expected before then. We will update this post when the board rules.
Our take
Carol City has given Miami Gardens a lot to be proud of over the years, on the field and off it. Programs like this one matter to the whole community, and that makes moments like this one hard. We hope everyone involved, including the Grayson player who was hurt, is doing well, and we will keep covering the Chiefs, including the outcome of any appeal.
