And here in our corner of South Florida, we're celebrating the way we do best: together, as a community, with food, family, and fireworks. The City of Miami Gardens hosts its Fourth of July celebration tonight at Risco Park (19000 NW 37th Ave). Gates open at 4:00 PM and the fireworks light up the sky at 9:00 PM, with food trucks, bounce houses, live entertainment, and family activities in between. It's free and built for families. A young city with a lot to be proud of
Miami Gardens is a young city. We were incorporated in 2003, making us barely two decades old as an official municipality, even as the neighborhoods that make us up (Andover, Bunche Park, Carol City, Lake Lucerne, Norland, Opa-locka North, and Scott Lake) go back generations. On a day when the nation reflects on 250 years of history, it's worth appreciating how much our community has accomplished in a fraction of that time.
We're the largest city in Florida with a majority Black population, home to roughly 111,000 residents. We're a place of Caribbean flavor, Southern roots, and genuine community pride. In just over 20 years, we've become a city that hosts Super Bowls, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the College Football Playoff, and this summer, the FIFA World Cup. Not bad for a city younger than many of its own residents.
A summer we'll never forget
This particular Fourth of July lands in the middle of an extraordinary summer. Our city is on the world stage, hosting World Cup matches at Hard Rock Stadium that have brought visitors and global attention to Miami Gardens. We've watched a fairytale underdog capture hearts, hosted some of the biggest names in world sport, and shown millions of people what this community is about. For a city that outsiders have too often overlooked, this summer has been a statement.
But today isn't about the stadium. It's about the neighborhoods, the families, the front porches, and the parks where the real Miami Gardens lives. It's about the people who make this city what it is, on the world stage or not.
